Optical observations of the thermospheric winds over Sondrestrom during the 1983/1984 winter for a total of 66 nights are used to examine the relationship between the neutral wind field characteristics and the IMF parameters, By and Bz. A new technique for the presentation of the features of the neutral wind field was particularly useful in identifying the IMF signatures for various nights. The results show that the neutral wind polar pattern is asymmetric when By is positive with the separatrix moved towards the morning sector. When By is negative, the circulation of the observed neutral wind field is more evenly balanced between the morning and evening cells.
