The corrections to be applied to absolute magnitudes computed from trigonometric parallaxes are evaluated, both for individual stars and for specified samples of a particular stellar type assuming a gaussian luminosity function. For simplicity it is also assumed that the stars are distributed with uniform density and that there is no observational selection according to proper motion. The range of validity of the Lutz-Kelker corrections is explored, and certain features of those corrections are discussed.
