We propose an application of the method of maximum likelihood to the problem of weighting the positions of meridian circle catalogues. For instance, weights play an important role for the individual improvement of the Fourth Fundamental Catalogue. The method is described and compared with the conventional procedure. Experiments with simulated data are analyzed, and applications to modern catalogues are discussed. It turns out that the new method is superior to the existing procedure. In particular, the weights are less uncertain, and the individual errors of the fundamental stars can be taken into account more precisely.
