ALMA will have a huge impact on our understanding of the cold gas and
dust in our Galaxy, and in particular on the origins of star and
planetary systems. In this paper, I review briefly some of the relevant
design drivers for ALMA, and outline the key capabilities of the array
which make it so suited to studying star formation.
