The 3CR sample of radio sources contains 42 quasars, which mostly fall into three classes: 2 core-dominated (CD), 25 lobe-dominated (LD), and 11 compact steep-spectrum (CSS). The broad optical/ultraviolet emission lines of the CSS quasars as a group have received scant attention. An optical spectrum of the CSS quasar 3C43 was obtained on 21 September 1992 with the Hale 5-m telescope, which revealed a CIV 1549 line with velocity FWHM=2900 km/s, and data from the literature were found for 8 more CSS quasars. Four lines were analyzed: CIV 1549, HeII 1640, MgII 2798, and H-beta 4861. All four lines are narrower in CSS quasars than in LD quasars (e.g., Mg II mean at 2800 km/s vs. 6800 km/s). The CIV and HeII lines are also narrower in CSS quasars than in CD quasars. The mean power law index in frequency for the optical continuum is similar in all three classes (about -1.2). The results of Baker and Hunstead (1995, ApJ, 452, L95) for the Molonglo quasar sample are similar for the line widths, but they found differences in continuum slopes between classes. Possible implications for models of the broad line region and quasar unification will be discussed.
