During a survey for distant carbon stars in the Galactic Halo we discovered an extremely bright, R=15.2 broad absorption line quasar at a redshift of z=3.87. The quasar is positionally coincident, within a few arcsec, with the IRAS source FSC08279+5255. This unique object appears to be the highest luminosity source yet known. Here we request NICMOS time to allow a through investigation of the system, aiming in particular to quantify to what extent gravitational lensing may be amplifying the intrinsic flux.
