We propose to make WFPC2 observations of comet 9P/Tempel 1 during its current {1997-1998} opposition in order to determine the properties of its nucleus {size, shape, and rotational period} in support of the NASA DS4/Champollion mission. Owing to its superior spatial resolution, HST observations of the comet will provide unique data that will be used by scientists and engineers at JPL to optimize various mission design parameters on DS4. We plan to take deep R-band images of the comet on 8 consecutive {or nearly so} orbits sometime between 1 DEC 1997 and 12 JAN 1998.
