Recent studies of T Tauri populations in nearby star forming clouds have shown that the majority of stars exist in multiple {binary or higher} systems. An analysis of binary separations in Taurus-Auriga shows that many objects must have formed from, and coexist within, the same nascent cloud material and share circumstellar discs. Simulations of the interaction of binary companions with the surrounding material predict the development of circumbinary envelopes and rings. As yet there is very little observational evidence for these structures, which may have profound implications for star and planet formation. We propose a polarimetric study of T Tauri binary systems in Taurus-Auriga. At these distances the required resolution falls comfortably within the capabilities of HST, but cannot easily be achieved from the ground other than with adaptive optics techniques which preclude the use of imaging polarimetry. We will use NIC1 and NIC2 to obtain imaging linear polarimetry of the component objects and the surrounding circumbinary material. This will allow us to form a picture of the interaction between the binary components and the circumbinary material in each system. The high resolution imaging polarimetry will allow us to search for evidence of asymmetrical distributions, ring structures and warps. We will also investigate the relative orientations of the unresolved circumstellar discs around the individual binary components, which can only be achieved through polarimetry.
