We propose to continue our long-term project on supernovae which was approved by the Cycle 6 TAC for Cycles 7 and 8. Supernovae create the chemical history of the Universe, energize the interstellar gas, and stand at the center of efforts to understand the extragalactic distance scale. HST can make unique contributions to understanding supernovae, as we have demonstrated through this program in past years, and now STIS and NICMOS offer new opportunities for deepening this investigation. Our approach is intensive study of just a few well-selected objects, such as SN 1987A, SN 1992A, SN 1993J in M81, a late time observation of SN 1996X, and a new Target-of-Opportunity observation of a bright, new supernova to be selected during Cycle 7. We aim to explore the UV emission from supernovae, exploit the spatial resolution of HST and press the late-time observations of supernovae into uncharted territory. This is a long-term project because we are charting the evolution of objec ts that change on the timescale of a year or more. The SINS team provides extensive ground-based support and analytic power to craft an observing program that makes unique contributions to this field with HST.
