This program is designed to test the potential guide stars and the FGSs in which they may be acquired during the October 1998 CVZ passage for the HDF-South. A low-resolution spectrum of a bright QSO at z=2.25 will be taken with grating G230L {STIS/MAMA} to check that its line-of-sight is unobscured by extremely optically thick intervening systems. An early image with STIS CCD of the QSO field, together with the WFPC2 and NICMOS images of neighboring {5 arcmin away}, parallel fields, will allow an assessment of any potential problem caused by bright stars, scattered light, and related issues, and will provide an exciting preview of the entire HDF-South science program. These test observations should be made during fall 1997 when the ORIENT will be the same as for the October 1998 CVZ passage.
