Hst Proposal Id #7295 Quasar Absorption Lines

Scientific paper

We propose to investigate the outer rotation curves of eight spiral galaxies at very large galactocentric radii by using the kinematical information from Ly-alpha absorption lines in the spectra of background quasars. This will enable us to measure the disk rotation up to ~ 7 times greater radius than what is possible in HI at 21cm. By constraining the rotation at these large radii one may hope to observe the expected turn down from flat rotation, determining for the first time the size of the dark matter halo and hence measure the total mass and mass-to-light ratio of disk galaxies.
