An overview of the Pamir cosmic-ray experiment is presented. Attention
is given to the operating principle of the X-ray emulsion chambers; the
passage of ultrahigh-energy particles through the atmosphere; the
characteristics of particle families and the features of multiple
production; hadron jets in cosmic rays; and halos in families.
