Based on recent work on nucleon structure functions, new cross-section estimates for the charged-current interactions of ultrahigh-energy neutrinos with nucleons are derived. The calculations include the full Q-squared evolution of the parton distribution functions for both sea and valence quarks. The cross section is found to be an order of magnitude larger than the traditional values for 10 to the 19th eV neutrinos. Implications of these results for neutrino physics are discussed, and it is shown that though the total rate of neutrino-induced air showers increases, the observable event rate decreases by a factor of two compared to previous estimates as the upward-going air showers are forced into the cone within Delta theta of the horizon.
