A survey is carried out to quantify the number of observable quasars in the direction of the Virgo cluster, particularly the central 5 x 5 deg of the Virgo core, in order to have a probe for studying material in the Virgo cluster. The quasars were identified to three levels of confidence with emission-line studies and verified with spectroscopic scans. A total of 26 quasars have been confirmed among 82 candidate objects; 50 of the candidates are in the core direction. The Virgo field therefore has a deficiency, by a factor of 12, in the number of observable quasars. The possibility that the quasar light is being absorbed either in by the galactic halos of Virgo galaxies or by low surface brightness by dwarf galaxies beyond Virgo is discussed.
