The first paper in this report is a slightly revised version of The structure of the High Atmosphere. I. Linear Models, from Special Report 21. Based on a discussion by Nicolet, in which he outlined several aspects of physical models for the high atmosphere, the author has constructed a conduction model. The results indicate that the model can be made consistent with present satellite data through adjustment of parameters. Although, as far as direct evidence from satellite data is concerned, temperature distribution above 250 km is still open to considerable uncertainty, the quality of the data permits determination of the temperature distribution with a fairly small uncertainty in a particular theoretical or semitheoretical model.
