The propagation of large amplitude plasma waves is of considerable theoretical importance with immediate application to the study of pulsars and the study of laser-plasma interactions. The present paper analyzes the stability of nonlinear relativistic superluminous traveling periodic waves in a cold unmagnetized plasma against small amplitude perturbations which propagate in the same direction as the nonlinear wave. Specifically, consideration is given to transverse circularly polarized waves in a plasma of arbitrary electron-ion mass ratio; the case of an electron-positron plasma is considered in detail.
