The large-scale characteristics of the cusp region field-aligned currents observed in the south polar region are determined from the analysis of magnetometer data obtained from more than 230 passes of Triad received at McMurdo, Antarctica, during the period from March to August 1974. Attention is given to the statistical characteristics of these currents and to their relationship to the interplanetary magnetic field. The results point to the possibility of a strong connection between field-aligned currents, ionospheric currents, electric field and convective plasma flow patterns at midday high latitudes, and the interplanetary magnetic field.
