A study has been made of the distribution of Rb and Ga in basic volcanic rocks and their constituent groundmass and mineral phases. Partition coefficients for Rb and Ga have been determined between pyroxene and groundmass and plagioclase and groundmass. The diadochy of Rb and K in mineral phases is discussed in terms of random adsorption and site occupancy of the cations. The geochemistry of Ga is discussed in relation to both Al and Fe 3+ , and the available evidence suggests the Ga / Al coherence is not as close as has hitherto been assumed.
