The author defends certain points of his planetary theory of solar activity against criticism raised by Meeus (1978). It is pointed out that the choice of 11.13 years for the average 11-year solar period is supported by 24 centuries of historical data. Bigg (1965) noted a diminution of geomagnetic activity during inferior conjunctions of Mercury and Venus, which confirms the reality of planetary tidal effects. The fact that the small amount of energy involved in planetary tides can unleash the tremendous energies involved in sunspots is made plausible by drawing attention to the fact that a tropical typhoon can be unleashed by a very slight atmospheric depression under favorable conditions. It is in this sense that the relation between planetary tides and sunspots should be understood.
