The niobium contents are determined by the method of fluorescent X-ray spectrography for several rock types of the Tertiary Hocheifel volcanic province (Western Germany). Alkalic olivine basalt contains 65 ppm Nb (7 samples), hawaiite 69 ppm (4 samples), mugearite 86 ppm (3 samples), trachyte 95 ppm (5 samples), basanitoid 77 ppm (6 samples), ankaramite 65 ppm (2 samples), hauyne-bearing alkali basalt 110 ppm (2 samples), and a monchiquite dike 86 ppm. Niobium enrichment is observed in the alkalic olivine basalt-trachyte series in the later stage of differentiation and the Nb / Ti -ratio increases five to six times. Alkalic olivine basalt magma becomes poorer in niobium by accumulation of olivine (10 ppm Nb) and clinopyroxene (20 ppm Nb) but enrichment of niobium is also possible by taking up titanmagnetite (350-1000 ppm Nb) and kaersutite (38-50 ppm Nb) beside olivine and clinopyroxene (ankaramite HF 5 and the basanitoids). The most Nb-bearing rockforming mineral is titanmagnetite. It contains 65-85 per cent of the niobium in the volcanic rock while the clinopyroxene and the feldspars of the groundmass have Nb-contents up to 45 and 67 ppm respectively.
