The mid- and low latitude regions of the thermosphere, between 500 km and 1500 km, is coupled to the ionosphere by means of charge exchange reactions involving ions on closed magnetic field lines. The ionospheric ions may have a hemispheric flow depending on season, or they may flow up in both hemispheres due to refilling after a geomagnetic storm. In either case the ions interact with the background neutrals, undergo charge exchange reactions, lose an electron, and becoming an energetic neutral. These energetic neutrals then continue in a parabolic path, which may either escape from the atmosphere, join the population of ballistic particles known as the geocorona, or rain down on the thermosphere depending on their energy. The particles of interest in this study are the heavier neutral O particles that do not gain sufficient energy to escape, and thus rain down on the thermosphere adding mass, momentum, and energy to the low-latitude regions of the thermosphere. In order to perform this study, the USU global Ionosphere Plasmasphere Model (IPM) was coupled to the USU Neutral Stream code, which was then oupled to the USU Global Thermosphere code.
