The effect of the geomagnetic storms (Dst index < -100) on the low latitude F-region irregularities in the post-sunset hours during a 7.5-year period of 1/April/1998 - 30/September/2005 have been statistically studied by the TEC phase fluctuation observations of the ground-based global positioning system (GPS) receivers in the Brazilian longitude sector. Results show that the low latitude irregularities are significantly suppressed during the main and recovery phase of the geomagnetic storms in the high irregularity activity season (April - August). In contrast, the post-sunset triggering signatures are pronounced in the low irregularity activity season (September-March). To further understand storm effected behaviors of the low latitude F-region irregularity in the post-sunset hours, the relationship between the intensity of TEC phase fluctuation and the occurrence time of the storm onset and turnings of IMF Bz is examined and discussed.
