While the C-14 in a returned sample of Martian atmosphere should be a good indicator of atmosphere-regolith interactions, the high calculated production rate of C-14 in Martian soil with 1 percent nitrogen indicates that the nitrogen content of Martian soil needs to be determined. The nature of that nitrogen, especially with respect to whether C-14 would be able to escape, must also be considered.
