The Lunar Dust EXperiment (LDEX) is a dust detector instrument designed and built for the LADEE (Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer) mission. The goal of LDEX is to map the dust environment of the Moon from a ~ 50 km altitude orbit. The two basic mechanisms elevating dust particles to high altitudes are the continual micrometeoroid bombardment of the lunar surface, generating a permanently present dust cloud around the Moon, and the possible electrostatic lofting of small (~100 nm) dust particles to high altitudes. The two dust populations will be characterized in different modes: Ejecta particles will be detected individually through the hypervelocity impact charge they produce. The larger population of small particles are too small to be detected individually and their charge will be measured collectively in an integral mode. The flight model of LDEX has been build and calibrated at two dust accelerator facilities: at the Max-Planck Institute in Heidelberg, Germany, and at the Colorado Center for Lunar Dust and Atmospheric Studies (CCLDAS), University of Colorado. LDEX is designed to operate in the severe UV environment over the sunlit lunar surface. The low sensitivity to solar UV is achieved by both the geometry of the instrument and the optical qualities of the impact target surface. LDEX is scheduled for launch onboard the LADEE spacecraft in May, 2013.
