The first observations of circular polarization in type III bursts with spatial resolution in the range 164-435 MHz are presented. The degree of polarization is in general neither constant nor uniform over burst extent, and increases with frequency. Observations are discussed and it is proposed that they give access to the inhomogeneity of the coronal magnetic field and its variation with height.
