Magellan became the first planetary mission ever to apply aerobraking as a means of significantly altering both the orbit and mission objectives. Aerobraking uses the spacecraft's structure as a decelerator during its flight through an atmosphere. This successful maneuver paves the way for reducing launch weight, cutting propellant needs, and lowering costs on future missions.
