Paleomagnetic signals in cores from two nearby lakes (Linnévatn and Skardtjønn) on Spitsbergen (78°N) record high-latitude geomagnetic field variations for the last 10000 years. Although the paleomagnetic signal in the lake Linnévatn core has probably been modified by subsampling effects, application of a latitude-invariant transformation procedure yields logs with directional amplitudes similar to the transformed Holocene paleosecular variation master curve from the UK. Stratigraphic correlations, based on pattern recognition, suggest maximum ages of the lacustrine sediments in agreement with 14C age determinations. Age-depth curves, based on more than six magnetic datum horizons from each core, reveal an abrupt increase in sedimentation rate in Linnévatn from about 0.4 mm year-1 to about 0.8 mm year-1 around 2500 B.P. Vertical inclinations in both cores between about 3500 and 6000 B.P. are interpreted to reflect a stationary magnetic pole in the region of the sampling sites; this adds further arguments for the proposed sudden dipole shift recognized around 3500 B.P. in paleomagnetic records from high-latitude (63°N) lacustrine sediments in Alaska.
