The relevant characteristics of Archaean greenstone and post-Archaean flood-basalt provinces are reviewed. The level of neutral buoyancy of the magma and solidification in the dyke-tip are identified as the key controls for the trapping of mafic melts in solid crust and the formation of crustal magma chambers. It is suggested that komatiites and picrites can erupt in preference to basalts because they are less prone to freezing at the dyke-tip during dyke propagation.
