Evidence of weak double layer (DL) formation in stable conditions is presented; these layers share most of the properties of the stronger structures observed in unstable conditions, except for those associated with ion dynamics. Their weakness explains why they have almost no effect in the ion phase space. The formation of weak ion acoustic DLs under linearly unstable conditions is examined; and attention is given to simulations which demonstrate that small DLs can be produced by a localized current interruption in a marginally stable plasma. An interesting aspect of the weak DLs is the recurrent formation of electron holes.
