Pulsating radar echoes observed from Bluff, New Zealand, during the I.G.Y. are examined. The pulsations exhibit a diurnal variation in occurrence, periods dependent on latitude and onset times dependent on planetary K-index. These features, combined with the observed period range of 1-9 min and an association with magnetic activity, suggest a hydromagnetic excitation mechanism in the outer magnetosphere.
