The thicknesses of the auroral arcs were measured on thirty, twenty-four and six independent homogeneous auroral arcs which respectively occurred during 1958 directly above three I.G.Y. stations in Alaska: College, Kotzebue and Farewell. The measured thicknesses over the three Alaskan stations were in the range from 1·7 to 23·1 km; the average was 8·8 km. The thicknesses were related to the geomagnetic and earth-current activities. No significant daily, seasonal or latitudinal variation of thickness was found.
