The status of Japanese space efforts is discussed. The development of
the NASDA booster rocket is described, and the most important Japanese
booster rockets are listed along with their characteristics. Japanese
progress toward manned space flight is addressed, and the activities of
the Japanese Institute for Space Research are examined.
