This note addresses two common problems occurring in the context of large sky surveys, namely how to optimally predict the category of objects examined in the survey and how to optimally rank-order the list of interesting candidates in order to schedule follow-up observations. Answers to these questions depend on the scientific goals of the survey progamme. It is shown that the category prediction problem can be dealt with using standard methods from statistical pattern recognition.
