The authors have mapped a large fraction of the disk of M81 in the CO (1-0) line with 1 arcmin resolution (1 kpc). The molecular distribution in this galaxy is characterized by a central depletion, a maximum density between 4 and 7 kpc from the center and confinement to spiral arms. The mean surface density ratio σH2/σHI at the detected CO positions is 0.4 and the molecular component represents only a small fraction of the total interstellar mass. The H2 component of M81 thus appears very similar to that of the Andromeda galaxy.
