A consistent picture of the splitting of comet Halley is emerging based on a synthetic analysis of the 1910 and 1986 data. When the comet was near perihelion, and especially just past perihelion, some large eruptive processes happened. It is probable that a fragment, thrown off the parent nucleus, will act as a secondary nucleus. This secondary nucleus, lining up in the tail spine of the parent one, will develop into a temporary mini-comet with its own plasma tail, fan and jet.
