Attention is given to the thermoelectromagnetohydrodynamics and electrodynamics of averaged fields in which the initiating toroidal magnetic field is generated by thermoelectric currents flowing at the lower mantle/liquid core boundary. The toroidal magnetic field is transformed through the alpha effect into a poloidal field. Estimates are obtained which show good agreement with previously determined values of the earth's magnetic moment and the mean conductivity of the lower mantle.
