A case study from 1978 is used to demonstrate the variation of ionospheric absorption in the poststorm period with the characteristics of high speed plasma streams (HSPSs). The results suggest that a pronounced poststorm event can be expected if a high-peak-velocity HSPS is accompanied by an important solar flare located at a central position. It is noted that the HSPS by itself generally leads to a rather moderate after-effect in ionospheric absorption, even if the HSPS peak velocities surpass the 600 km/s value.
