The upper atmospheres of the Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune at equatorial latitudes are much hotter than can be explained on the basis of heating by absorption of solar EUV radiation. Attempts to explain this phemonenom with heating by waves, energetic particle precipitation, and meridional transport of energy deposited in auroral zones will be reviewed. Calculations of rovibrational damping of vertically propagating buoyancy waves will be presented. The possibility that processes occuring on Jovian planets also occur on in the upper atmospheres of extrasolar planets will be discussed as well as speculation on the effects of intense stellar EUV radiation on these upper atmospheres.
