The Mars Express (MEX) mission will carry/lead a plasma instrument (ASPERA-3) very close to Mars' inner natural satellite, Phobos. The orbit of this body is partially embedded in the undisturbed solar wind, and partially in the deflected plasma around the planet. Since Phobos has no atmosphere, the interaction of the solar wind with its surface produces sputtering processes, resulting in the emission of energetic neutrals. Here we discuss the feasibility of investigating such phenomena by means of ASPERA-3 and obtaining important information about the properties of Phobos' soil.
