The MAG/ER measurements from the Mars Global Surveyor satellite are used to study the magnetic field on the Martian dayside, and its variation with the solar wind. Because of the lack of solar wind measurements near Mars, solar wind measurements near Earth during a period centred on a Mars-Earth conjunction are used. Concurrent variations at Mars and Earth related to the interplanetary sector-structure and dynamic pressure variations are demonstrated. During the investigated time-period the Mars Global Surveyor satellite (MGS) was in its mapping phase, passing in and out of the regional "mini-magnetospheres" associated with the strong crustal anomalies. Far from the crustal anomalies we find a significant IMF-By asymmetry both in the magnetic and the electron reflectometer data. The observed asymmetry in the magnetic field intensity is similar to what have been observed at Venus, and consistent with the interpretation that it is due to pick up of planetary ions and finite gyro-radius effects. Close to the strong anomalies we find significant westward magnetic field residuals on the dayside, regardless of the sign of IMF By. This could be a signature of a Martian analogy to the Chapmann-Ferraro currents at the Earth's magnetopause.
