The effective Landé factor, gbar, of a magnetic sensitive line can be calculated by means of the experimental Landé factors of the lower and upper levels of the atomic transition. Values of gbar for several iron lines of the solar spectrum are calculated and compared with the approximate values based on the L-S coupling scheme. Simple formulae are also derived to express the variance of the distributions of the σ and π components of a Zeeman multiplet around the respective centers of gravity.
