The paper investigates 120 well-defined limb surges that were observed by means of the Wroclaw Observatory coronagraph from September, 1966, to November, 1977. The evolution of surges is compared to radio data during the surges, and a correlation is found between radio bursts and the surges, especially with chains of type I radio bursts. The start of a surge is found to coincide within 5 min with the start or enhancement of the type I storm in 23 of 30 associated events. The maximum height reached by a surge is compared with the frequencies of the radio bursts emitted at the same time, and the maximum velocity of the rising surge is compared with the frequency drift of type I chains. The absence of correlations appears to be due to differences between the surge and radio emission mechanisms, which may have a common source.
