Combined visual and infrared observations of supernovae provide direct evidence for the condensation of fine dust in the rapidly expanding shells. While the gaseous shells are eventually decelerated and brought to rest by interaction with the ambient interstellar medium, the condensed dust is injected into this medium with large initial speeds. While the frictional interaction of these high speed dust grains leads to their deceleration, they simultaneously lose mass due to sputtering while they initially charge up due to secondary electron emission by ion impact. Here we follow the dynamical evolution of such grains by solving the simultaneous equations for conservation of charge, mass momentum and energy. The large residence times of these grains and the associated large travel distances suggest that they could be a source of heavy ions far from the central explosion.
