While most substorms discussed in the literature have weak growth phase signatures, and distinct expansion phase development with propagation effects observable over a wide latitude-longitude range, the November 11, 1976 event discussed had growth phase signatures at substorm levels and an expansion phase that was weak and restricted to the Scandinavian sector. Recordings made in this sector indicate large fluctuations, of which two stages after substorm onset can be resolved: (1) high-energy particle precipitation and maximum ionospheric current density increase, and (2) constant maximum ionospheric density while particle precipitation decreases and auroral brightness increases. It is suggested that the time interval of these two stages may be seen as a trigger phase, and the energy coupling between magnetosphere and solar wind during the pre-substorm phases is discussed in light of Perreault and Akasofu's (1978) energy coupling function.
