The energy transfer rate from the solar wind to the magnetosphere is characterized by a magnetic coupling parameter on open field lines and by a viscous coupling parameter on closed field lines, on the basis of the dimensional analysis method. The histogram of the magnetic coupling parameter is found to peak in the -0.1 to 0.1 range, under the assumption that the energy transfer rate can be monitored by the total energy dissipation rate of the magnetosphere, implying that (1) the energy transfer is primarily governed by the MHD dynamo process on open field lines and (2) indicating that the epsilon function of Perreault and Akasofu is verified as the first approximation of the solar wind-magnetosphere energy coupling function.
