An investigation of 34 visually estimated magnitudes of comets 1974 XII,
1975 II and 1977 IX at large heliocentric distances (5.6 - 9.7 A.U.)
shows that the brightness variations conform with n = 7.1 + or - 1.0.
This is supported by upper limits for the brightness of 1975 II at 13
A.U., established with the ESO 3.6 m telescope.
