An examination is conducted of the informational content of cometary coma spectra, as well as of the means by which it can be used to derive the abundances of the various species. High resolution spectra can furnish data on the physical conditions existing within the coma, with accurate measurement of Doppler displacements and emission linewidths leading to a better knowledge of the velocity field of coma particles. Knowledge of the incident solar spectrum is a prerequisite to this analysis, which can in some cases be complicated by radiation transfer problems.
