Circular polarization 6-cm synthesis maps taken with the Westerbork synthesis radio telescope have led to the detection of horseshoe-shaped structures, associated with sunspot penumbrae, whose high degree of circular polarization requires gyroresonant emission. In contrast to the polarized emission, the total 6-cm emission intensity is enhanced above the sunspot umbrae and exhibits a remarkable correlation with the underlying photosphere's longitudinal magnetic field. Brightness temperatures of about one million K are found above sunspot umbrae in coronal regions where the longitudinal magnetic field strength ranges between 600 and 900 gauss. It is found that temporal instability precludes the synthesis map detection of cool material above sunspot umbrae, due to the exclusive sensitivity to the more long-lived and stable hot material.
