The intensity of additional OH and H small-comet signatures produced by release of water form small comets near the earth is estimated and Morgan and Shemansky (1990) calculations are used for a lunar OH signature. It is proposed that terrestrial and lunar small-comet signatures will be visible to the ultraviolet spectrometer during earth flybys on the Galileo spacecraft. It is projected that the mission will detect a cometlike tail trailing the earth due to the break up and evaporation of small comets which come close to earth but do not enter the atmosphere. It is also projected that Galileo will detect a similar phenomenon on the moon; this 'lunar corona' would be the result of the lunar impact of many small comets.
