The vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor of an arbitrary collection of conformal massless free quantum fields (scalar, spinor and vector) in the spacetime of a static, spherically symmetric global monopole is found, up to an undetermined numerical constant. The linearized semiclassical Einstein equations are then solved perturbatively to find the first-order corrections to the exterior metric of such a monopole. The results show that for symmetry breaking scales near the Planck energy, gravitational vacuum polarization effects may significantly alter the value of the monopole core mass; the asymptotic value of the deficit solid angle of the monopole, however, is not changed.
